Jeff Dufty

Born in Sydney, Australia, I grew up in the small country town of Cairns in the Tropical North. I am convinced I was a trust fund baby and my name tag was accidentally switched on my hospital crib. I was supposed to be born retired, I don’t understand it. One of my fondest early childhood rock memories was attending a concert with a wild pub band called AC/DC. After 4 concerts in my home state, these teenagers were banned for gross indecency. It was a short tour indeed. Jim Morrison sure got a raw deal – he had nothing on these guys. After leaving Cairns, I attended college in Brisbane and practiced law for several years during the 1980’s and early 90’s. During that time, I started playing drums semi-professionally with work buddies (all lawyers). Our band, Wrapped in Plastic, played quirky covers and originals. We had a blast. Hard rock/thrash versions of pop songs, like Abba’s “Mamma Mia” and Devo’s “Beautiful World” and Pink Floyd’s “Money” created a solid following of big drinking yuppies. In 1994, after a few years together, I moved to New York to attend Columbia University.

In New York, it wasn’t long before 5 of us students got together to form Slingshot (originally Teabag). After graduating, we (4 by then) got jobs in New York and focused on writing “Alternative Rock” originals. Friday nights saw us playing smoky haunts around the East Village, drinking until dawn and eating breakfast at Tom’s (of Seinfeld fame) before sleeping until early afternoon. Tom’s diner actually served hamburgers with a fried egg on them – an Aussie favorite.

By this stage, I was living as a management consultant and got married to a career woman. Our jobs had us leaving New York and by the time Slingshot disbanded, we were a trio. Those darn day jobs.

Eventually, I landed in Chicago. One day, 2 Slingshot buddies and I decided to have a reunion and lock ourselves away for a weekend of music. The only problem we were short a singer. I agreed to bring my next door neighbor, Kevin, along. Untested Kev was awesome. To this day, he has never sung out of key or off pitch. He is a natural. My buddies went home, Kevin had the bug and found 3 really talented guys living in the neighborhood. The rest is the birth of the Saints. Game on!!

I play a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute acoustic kit and have an early Roland electric kit. I bought the Roland to play in my Manhattan apartment. This way the neighbors wouldn’t shoot me for making too much noise. As for musical influences….I like it all. Favs include The Tragically Hip, Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Mellencamp…the list goes on. I think Chris Martin from Coldplay is overrated. Of the Aussie bands, fans should get into Powderfinger, Grinspoon, Paul Kelly, Cold Chisel, Hunters & Collectors and Angel City. This all good stuff.

Hope to see you all at a show for some great “pub” rock and roll.
