My “rock and roll roots” are embedded in the far South Side of Chicago, home of the infamous South Side Irish parade and a bastion for fans of the World Champion Chicago White Sox. The people of this area are generally known to be hard working, intensely loyal and, on occasion, a bit crazy. If you’ve been to the parade, you know what I mean. Many days were spent (some may say “wasted”) playing rock and roll in a handful of bands that played in local bars, parties and the occasional wedding. We covered many popular rock and roll bands of the day, however the band I enjoyed the most was known for doing some great U2 and Santana covers (what a combination!) Some bands from the South Side went on to great fame and fortune, we weren’t one of those. Tom Long was responsible for getting me involved with SS, (for which I will never forgive him), as he invited me to join Jeff and Kevin for an informal afternoon of music. Things really seemed to gel and I was happy to see that this group was playing some different material, had a unique sound (including the Aussie influence that Jeff brings) and mostly avoided the stuff we’ve all heard thousands of bands do previously. In addition to jamming with SS, I play in a “house band” named “M51” with my two sons, Patrick and Jack and we have recently added my daughter, Maggie, into the mix. Up to this point my wife, Meg, has resisted joining the group. Recently SS added an excellent guitarist and a great guy in Jim B. and even though we have not been together for very long we are “rock and rolling” along. I am looking forward to jamming with these guys for many years to come. Hope you come along for the ride! BC |
